The Federal Work Study Program offers employment opportunities to work study students who are interested in working in a community service environment. All community service jobs are paid positions and provide an opportunity for students to earn money and do meaningful work that will improve the quality of life for community residents.

Work Study Eligibility

  • You must file a Free Application for Financial Student Aid (FAFSA) and receive an offer of Federal Work Study Program funds on your award letter.
     
  • Complete the Job Application form on-line.
     
  • Return the offer letter and the Job Application form to the Office of Financial Aid.


How to Apply for a Community Service Job
 

  • Contact the person listed for the position you are interested in to schedule a job interview. Most interviews may be conducted by telephone. You may interview for more that one position, but you can only work at one job.
  • Tell the interviewer that you are accepting the job offer.
  • In conjunction with the job supervisor, establish a work schedule and the date that you will start.
  • Contact the Student Employment Office to finalize your job assignment. We will need the name of the department or agency and the name of the person making the job offer. After we have received this information, we will prepare the Employment Authorization Forms you will need in order to begin working.

You cannot begin working until you have received your Employment Authorization Form from the Student Employment Office.

Latino Scholars Program

 

Tutor - LINCOLN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL - Work during school hours as a tutor with teacher  and teacher aids. Assist   K-8th grade students in an homework enrichment/mentoring program that promotes literacy development. Tutors will help students in all subjects depending on America Reads/America Counts designation of the school. 

Requirements:  Bilingual and education major a plus.  Experience with learning disabilities and working with groups helpful.   Experience tutoring math, spelling and science preferred but not required.

Tutor - NEW BRUNSWICK SCIENCE, HEALTH AND TECHNOLOGY HIGH SCHOOL - Work as an after-school tutor / mentor to 9th, 10th, 11th & 12th grade 14 to 17 year old high school students in our homework enrichment/mentoring program located in downtown New Brunswick that promotes literacy development. Will help students in all subjects.

Requirements:  Bilingual, advanced math, and science tutoring experience preferred, but not required.

Paul Robeson America Reads*America Counts

 

Tutor - Tutor and mentor school children in math and / or reading, writing and language arts.  Provide assistance to classroom teachers by working with small groups or individual children needing extra help.  Attend required on-going training workshops, tutor meetings and other related activities.  Participate in program evaluations.

Requirements:  Interest is providing academic assistance and mentoring to school children.

Graduate Student Coordinator/Mentor - Under the supervision of Program Director, responsible for coordinating & evaluating tutoring programs.  Train, mentor and provide on-site supervision for undergraduate tutors.  Responsible for collecting, verifying and preparing tutor payroll.  Schedule and conduct regular meetings with tutors.  Serve as liaison between the tutoring program and school.  Provide administrative support to program director.

Graduate School of Education, Tutoring Plus Program

 

Tutor -Tutoring Plus seeks work study students to assist in an after-school program at a local elementary/middle school.  Duties will include assisting children with their homework and helping supervise after school clubs.

Requirements:  Must be good working with children.  The program serves children in 3rd- 8th grade.

Classroom Assistant - Classroom assistants assist teachers during the school day in implementing lesson plans, running the classroom, and making sure students stay on task.  The school(s) we primarily work with have students from pre-Kindergarten to 8th grade.

Requirements:  Being bilingual in Spanish is helpful (but not required) since many students in local New Brunswick schools are of Latino/Hispanic descent.  We also need more people for the younger grades (pre-K- 1) and for after school programs (mostly 4th- 8th graders.)

Recess Aide - Duties include helping school staff monitor students during recess periods.  Grades 1-5.

Nursery School Classroom Assistant - The teacher’s aide assists the full time staff in the care and supervision of the children enrolled in the preschool program.  Responsibilities include:  supervising children engaged in classroom activities and in outdoor playground activities; administering minor first aid; assisting in children’s snack preparations; assisting in the daily care of young children, including diaper changing; assisting in the daily maintenance/housekeeping of the childcare center.
