Graduate School of Education Tutoring Plus - America Reads*America Counts
The Graduate School of Education Tutoring Plus Program provides a wide range of tutoring and support services to the New Brunswick School District. The program offers tutoring in all academic subjects including reading, math and language arts. In addition to tutoring, students may also choose to work with one or more of the support services programs such as recreation, school library, computer lab or arts program. Under the supervision of the faculty director, graduate students coordinate the various GSE Tutoring Plus programs. They train, supervise and mentor undergraduate tutors. They serve as liaisons between the school and the GSE program; assist with research projects and program development; and provide essential administrative support to the program director. Ideas for new programs and services are encouraged . Opportunities may also be available to graduate students to explore related research topics.
In addition to tutoring in academic subjects, students may opt to use their special talents or explore their special interests in or more of Tutoring Plus’s innovative support services programs. All programs are designed to promote positive interactions between Rutgers students and the children they serve.
Computer Lab - This position may be of special interest to computer science majors. Duties are to provide assistance to children using educational software for math and reading. Help older children to use word processing and the internet for homework and class assignments. May also help teachers trouble shoot hardware and software problems. Requires general computer literacy.
Library Assistant – Assist the graduate student coordinator with presenting books to children, reading books to children and assisting them to select age/grade appropriate books.
Arts Program – Assist with arts enrichment program. Students with experience or interest in performing arts, particularly theater and fine arts are encouraged to apply.
Recreation Program - The recreation program is designed to provide creative and supervised recreation activities involving interaction between children and the tutors. Tutors will participate in the activities and assist graduate student coordinators to plan and organize games and team sports. Hours are 11:00 – 1:30.

Latino Scholars Program – America Reads*America Counts
The Latino Scholars Program is a partnership between the Rutgers University Latino Arts and Cultural Center, the Puerto Rican Action Board and the Rutgers Student Employment Office. The program offers academic tutoring and mentoring and cultural support to 6th, 7th and 8th grade students at the Roosevelt Elementary School. The program meets after school from 3:15 to 5:30, Monday-Friday. Students receive academic tutoring in reading, language arts and math. They also receive assistance with learning how to prepare for and take tests, time management and basic research techniques. An enrichment component sponsors field trips to cultural and recreational events. The Cultural Appreciation and Awareness Discovery Project is an opportunity for the children to research their cultural heritage.
The students in the program are Latino, monolingual Spanish, or with little English proficiency. Bilingual tutors are encouraged to apply. All interested tutors are welcome!

Graduate School of Education Literacy Project
Based on the research model developed by the faculty director, this highly successful program offers academic tutoring in reading and writing to pre-k through third grade students.
Tutoring sessions may be with an individual child or small groups of two or three children. Tutors may also assist the classroom teacher with small groups of children in need of additional help. Graduate students provide training and on site tutor supervision. Two school sites are available: Livingston Elementary School and Lincoln Elementary School. Tutors may work during the school day, 9:00-3:00 or during the after school program, 3:00-5:00.

Paul Robeson America Reads*America Counts Tutoring Program
The Paul Robeson America Reads*America Counts Tutoring Program offers academic tutoring services in reading, math and language arts to the 6th, 7th and 8th grade students at the Schor Middle School in Piscataway. The program also offers support services, such as, the computer lab, school library, an enrichment program in theater arts, and a mentoring program. The school is located in Piscataway, near the Busch and Livingston Campuses. Transportation for tutors will be provided by van service to and from the Schor School. The van will leave from the Paul Robeson Cultural Center on the Busch Campus, and will operate on a regular schedule during the school day.
The Schor School is rich in cultural diversity. Twenty-five percent (25%) of its student population speak languages other than English at home. Students with limited proficiency in English make up nine percent (9%) of the school population. Tutors who are bi-lingual in any of the following languages are encouraged to apply: Gujarati, Spanish, Philippino, Cantonese, Mandarin, or Urdu. All interested students are welcome and are encouraged to apply.
Under the supervision of the Director of the Paul Robeson Cultural Center, graduate students will coordinate the various tutoring and support services activities. They will assist with the on-going training and supervision of undergraduate tutors including, scheduling and conducting regular tutor meetings. They will actively participate in program development and assist in implementing new initiatives. Graduate student coordinators will provide administrative support to the program director, and will be responsible for collecting tutor time sheets. They will work closely with school personnel to identify effective tutoring strategies.
The program operates Monday-Thursday. Students must have hours available between 8:00-12:00 for the morning session or 12:30-4:00 for the afternoon session. You may chose to work only one session per week or several sessions per week, depending on your availability.

Youth Services America Reads Program
The Youth Services America Reads Program is an after school program that provides tutoring in reading and homework assistance to New Brunswick elementary school children in grades 1st-8th. Tutors may choose to work in one of the five participating school sites. The hours are 3:15 to 6:00 Monday – Friday . The program offers a variety of fun activities to encourage children to read. Newspapers in Education uses newspaper articles and current events to stimulate their interest in reading. Storytelling and reading clubs introduce the children to literature and promote a love for reading. Hooked on Phonics offers a phonics approach to learning to read. Participating schools are:
