Latino Scholars Program – America Reads * America Counts
The Latino Scholars Program is a partnership between the Rutgers University Latino Arts and Cultural Center, the Puerto Rican Action Board and the Rutgers Student Employment Office. Programs include tutoring during the school day and after-school and a lunchtime recreation program recreation program. The children in the program are Latino, monolingual Spanish, or with little English proficiency. Bilingual tutors are encouraged to apply.

America Reads * America Counts Tutor – Provide assistance to 6th, 7th and 8th grade school children in an after-school homework enrichment/mentoring program that promotes literacy development and math proficiency.
Latino Scholars Tutor – Work as an after-school tutor/mentor for 9th, 10th 11th and 12th grade high school students in our homework enrichment/mentoring program located in downtown New Brunswick. The program promotes literacy development and math proficiency.

America Reads *
America Counts Tutoring Program
The Paul Robeson America Reads * America Counts Tutoring Program offers
academic tutoring services in reading, math and language arts to 6th,
7th and 8th grade students in Piscataway Public
Schools. Twenty-five percent of students served by the program speak
languages other than English at home. Tutors who are bi-lingual in the
following languages are encouraged to apply: Gujarati, Spanish, Cantonese,
Mandarin or Urudu. All interested students are welcome and
encouraged to apply.
Under the supervision of the director or the Paul Robeson Cultural Center,
graduate and undergraduate students coordinate the various tutoring and
support services. Tutor and mentor school children in math and/or reading,
writing and language arts. Provide general assistance to classroom teachers
by working with small groups or individual children needing extra help.
Tutors must have hours available between 8:00am-12:00 for morning sessions
or 12:30-3:30pm for afternoon sessions Mon-Thurs, Friday 1:30-6:30. You may
choose to work only one session per week, or several sessions per week,
depending on your availability.
Transportation is
provided by van from the Paul Robeson Center on Busch Campus to the school
sites.

Youth Services
America Reads
Program
The Youth Services America Reads Program is an after school program that
provides tutoring in reading and homework assistance to New Brunswick
elementary school children in grades 1st-8th. Tutors may choose
to work in one of the five participating school sites. The hours are 3:15 to
6:00 Monday – Friday . The program offers a variety of fun activities to
encourage children to read. Newspapers in Education uses newspaper
articles and current events to stimulate their interest in reading.
Storytelling and reading clubs introduce the children to literature and
promote a love for reading. Hooked on Phonics offers a phonics
approach to learning to read. Participating schools are:
During the summer, the PLAY SAFE Program offers a 6-week session that
focuses on reading, language arts and math. Sessions are held from 9:00am –
Noon. Tutors work under the direct supervision of the teachers. All training
is done by certified teachers of the New Brunswick Schools. A donation from
a local bookstore will be used to provide age appropriate reading for the
children. Some books may be given to the children to take home.
